100% clean energy
- 70% solar, with 14.04 kW of production, saving over $300 a month on power
- 30% from the national grid, most of it from the local solar farm in Rwamagana
- 80% of our water is heated by solar water heaters
- Six hours of backup power, with no generators and no engine noise
Food
Garden-to-table dining
- A great selection of vegetarian options, including 80% of our four-course dinner
- A one-acre vegetable garden on site, with over 50 varieties of herbs and vegetables
- 90% of the remaining vegetables sourced in the Eastern Province, within 10 km
- Made-in-Rwanda cheeses, juices and bread
- Food waste is composted and used as fertiliser
Waste
No single-use plastics
- Refillable soaps, lotions and hygiene products from the region, by Cinnabar Green and Kandaka Naturals
- No plastic bottles: triple-filtered, UV-treated drinking water is available at all times
- A five-chamber wastewater treatment system removes contaminants and keeps chemicals out of the lake
Building
Local, sustainable construction
- The first rammed earth lodge in East Africa, 30% more carbon efficient than comparable methods
- Over 90% of materials sourced in Rwanda: earth, steel and wood
- 100% Rwandan construction and design firms. Rwandan built, designed and managed
- Over 10,000 native plants planted on what was previously farmland
